At Lochaber Hope, we’re incredibly lucky to have a growing team of passionate young volunteers who bring fresh ideas, energy, and heart to everything they do. Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Shaun, one of our amazing young volunteers making a real difference in our community.

✨ Why did you start volunteering?
“I first got involved with Lochaber Hope because I needed some support myself. Being part of the project helped me feel more confident and less alone. After a while, I wanted to give something back—to be that friendly face for someone else, the way others were for me. Volunteering just felt like the right step, and now I get to help out while still learning and growing too.”
💬 Why do you enjoy volunteering?
“I really enjoy volunteering because it gives me the chance to help out in the community and meet lots of new people. I especially enjoy volunteering with the events that happen around New Connections as there’s always someone new to chat to, and that keeps it interesting."
🎄 What is your favourite event that you’ve volunteered at?
“I’d have to say the Christmas Fair. It was such a fun day, and I really enjoyed being involved from start to finish. I helped the staff with setting things up and keeping things running smoothly, but the best part was getting to talk to everyone involved, including the stall owners, carol singers and members of the general public. I also got free cake from one of the stall holders which was a great bonus! However, I recently volunteered at the Spring Open Day which was also pretty fun. I helped manage the cafe as well as being the Spring Bunny, handing out the prizes at the end of the egg hunt. It was great seeing how excited all the participants were and it was great to intereact with so many people of ifferent ages."

💛 How has volunteering helped you grow personally?
“It’s boosted my confidence a lot. A couple of years ago, I wouldn’t have imagined myself being comfortable helping run the café, chatting with new people, or standing up to talk in front of a group. I used to keep to myself more and worry about saying the wrong thing. But now, I actually look forward to it. I feel more sure of myself, and I know that even small conversations or helping out behind the scenes can make a difference.”
💡 Have you learned any new skills through volunteering?
“Definitely. I use to be quite quiet but now I have become more confident talking to new people and I have learnt a lot about working as part of a team with the staff and other volunteers. It’s helped me feel more capable in other parts of life too, especially with my work at the local veterinary clinic, interacting with new clients and working with the veterinary team.”
🌱 What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering but not sure?
“Just give it a go—even a little bit of your time can make a big difference. You don’t have to know everything or be super confident. You’ll learn as you go, and you’ll be supported the whole way.”

A Huge Thank You to Shaun!👏
